This May, the Senate Judiciary Committee passed the Senate immigration reform bill which initiated a pathway to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants. SB 744 passed with strong bipartisan support and it will now move to the Senate for a full vote.
While this marks a great step in the right direction- a step towards keeping families together and guaranteeing diversity in the United States, more work is yet to be done!
Despite the strong bipartisan support for the bill and immigration reform more broadly, many Senate leaders, including Illinois Senator Mark Kirk, remain silent on whether or not he will support SB 744.
It is important for the Muslim community to remain steadfast in their support of immigration reform. “Elected officials are in Washington to represent their constituents, their dreams, aspirations, and expectations – not themselves. It is unacceptable that elected officials be silent on this crucial issue at this historic juncture. Senator Kirk, like every official, owes his constituents full transparency as to his position on the issue. We hope it is the right one that will help fix a broken system and help move this great nation forward to a new era of functionality and opportunity. There’s no alternative to reform,” says CAIR-Chicago’s Executive Director Ahmed Rehab.
On the morning of May 29th, Chicagoans organized a protest around President Obama’s visit to his home city, aiming to call attention to ongoing deportations. CAIR-Chicago Deputy Director Sufyan Sohel and Communications Intern Rhys Leahy plan to attend an afternoon rally to further draw attention to the need for Comprehensive Immigration Reform.
CAIR-Chicago will also host a press conference on Thursday, May 30th in an effort to urge Senate leaders to show their support for Comprehensive Immigration Reform.
