CAIR-Chicago Governmental Relations Coordinator Sadiya Ahmed and intern Serim Cetin attended the Voting Rights Act forum on May 25, 2006 held at the Herald Washington Library. Sponsored by the League of Women Voters, the forum was held to educate the public on the origins of the Voting Rights Act, passed in the 1960s to protect minorities’ right to vote and prevent discrimination at the polls. The forum featured a 40 minute documentary, underscoring the discrimination that African Americans faced at the polls and while registering to vote. Some provisions are up to renewal during the fall 2007 Congressional session including the pre-clearance requirements for some states with a history of discrimination. States which have had discriminatory laws are required, under the pre-clearance provisions, to get approval on the federal level before enacting any regulations on elections and voting.
