Sufyan Sohel Speaks on DePaul Election Panel

CAIR-Chicago Deputy Director Sufyan Sohel participated on a panel today at DePaul University, College of Law.  Sohel was joined by Theresa Mah, who is running unopposed for the IL House of Representatives, Fred Tsao, ICIRR Senior Policy Counsel, Anita Maddali, Director of Clinics and Associate Professor at Northern Illinois University, and Mark Dinglasan, the Executive Director of CASA Cook County.  The Panelists spoke about the 2016 Presidential election and shared their respective expertise in representing their own communities.  Sohel was asked about media portrayal of Muslims and what government administrations can do to combat Islamophobia.

Sohel discussed the important of all Americans to work together to combat hateful rhetoric and America’s dark history of alienating, condemning, and discriminating against different religious and ethnic groups.  “We’ve seen it with the Chinese, the Japanese, the Germans, the Italians, the Mexicans and the Jews.  Throughout her history, America has marginalized various communities.  Right now its Muslims who are targeted, tomorrow it could be your community.”

The speakers all emphasized the importance of not only voting, but engaging and participating in the electoral process through education and volunteer efforts. Check out CAIR-Chicago Voter Guide here. Find your Polling Place. Vote Informed with Ballot Ready.
