What’s wrong with the way Muslims are portrayed in the media? Where do biases and stereotypes stem from? What does popular culture have to say about Muslim women? CAIR-Chicago communications coordinators Aymen Abdel Halim and Leena Saleh answered these questions and more in a presentation on March 21st at Saint Xavier University.
CAIR-Chicago’s Staff Attorney Rabya Khan and Communications Coordinators Aymen Abdel Halim and Leena Saleh visited Greyhound employees on March 12th and 13th to deliver cultural awareness presentations in an effort to improve customer relations and to gain a better understanding of the American-Muslim community.
On Monday, February 6th, Communications Coordinators Aymen Abdel Halim and Amina Sharif presented a lecture on Islam and the media for a class at DePaul University in Lincoln Park.
On January 12, students from Carthage College in Wisconsin paid a visit to CAIR-Chicago. Communications coordinators Aymen Abdel Halim and Leena Saleh featured presentations on historical contexts of Muslim representation, Muslim women in the media, and portrayals of Muslim women in popular culture.
CAIR-Chicago Communications Coordinators Aymen Abdel Halim and Leena Saleh will be giving a joint presentation discussing the role of women in Islam and the effect media has on the perception of Muslims in America. Attending will be students from Carthage College who are studying the role of women in the literature and arts of the contemporary Middle East.
Aymen Abdel Halim, the communications coordinator for Chicago’s Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), described the bill as a violation of citizens’ constitutional and civil rights. “This is kind of a widespread action against all Americans,” he said. “What we are seeing is a continued erosion of our civil liberties.”
CAIR-Chicago’s Communications Coordinator, Amina Sharif, along with Communications Extern Aymen Abdel Halim, visited Columbia College on July 6th to speak to Professor Rose Economou’s media ethics class on the importance of unbiased reporting in today’s media.
